Questions, answered.

Everything about SimpleTime – from the first tap to SimpleTime Pro.

Getting started

What is SimpleTime?

SimpleTime is a time tracker for iPhone, iPad and Mac. One tap starts the clock, one tap stops it. SimpleTime then shows you where your time goes – as a day list or timeline, in charts and statistics, and as a PDF report or CSV file. No account, no ads, no tracking.

Is SimpleTime free?

Yes. Downloading SimpleTime is free, and so is everything you need for tracking: tasks and subtasks, the day view, charts and statistics, reports and export, widgets, iCloud sync and backups. SimpleTime Pro is optional and adds the Apple Watch app, reviews, places, goals and more. All about SimpleTime Pro

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login – you open the app and start. If you use iCloud, sync runs through your own Apple Account, which we never see.

Which devices does SimpleTime run on?

On iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later, and on Macs with Apple silicon. The Apple Watch app is part of SimpleTime Pro and needs watchOS 26. With the same Apple Account, your entries stay in sync on all of them.

Which languages does SimpleTime speak?

41 – from English and German to Arabic, Hindi and Japanese. Under Settings › Language, you can choose the app’s language independently of your device’s language.

How do I get started?

Tap + in the Tracking tab to create a task – with a name, colour and symbol. Tap the triangle next to it and the clock runs; tap Stop to end it. On first launch, a short tour shows you the most important buttons. You can watch it again at any time under Settings › Show tour again.

Does SimpleTime work offline?

Yes, completely. Tracking, the day view, charts and reports all work without a connection. Sync and backups catch up as soon as your device is back online.

Tracking

How do I start and stop tracking?

Tap the triangle next to a task to start it. The running task appears at the top of the Tracking tab; tap Stop to end it. Tapping a task’s name opens its subtasks, swiping left lets you edit, archive or delete it, and swiping right shows its info with all the numbers.

Can two tasks run at the same time?

No. At most one tracking runs at a time. When you start another task, the running entry ends automatically – so your entries never overlap.

I forgot to start – can I add time afterwards?

Yes. In the Day tab, add a new entry with its start and end, or tap an existing one to change it. Entries can’t overlap: SimpleTime tells you if a period collides with another entry. For a tracking that’s still running, you can also move the start back – as far as the end of the previous entry.

How do subtasks work?

Tap a task’s name to open it, then add subtasks there with +. You can nest them as deeply as your work is – client, project, phase. In charts, reports and goals, subtasks count towards the task above them.

How do I keep my task list in order?

Mark the tasks you use every day as favourites – they stay at the top. The rest can be sorted alphabetically, by most used, by recently used or in a custom order. A colour and a symbol – or an emoji – make every task easy to spot.

What’s the difference between archiving and deleting?

Archiving only hides a task: its entries stay and keep counting in all analyses. Deleting moves the task and its entries to the trash. From there you can restore both – or delete them for good.

Can I add notes to entries?

Yes, every entry can carry a note – what you worked on, or who you met. Notes are shown in the day view and are included in the CSV export and in backups.

Can SimpleTime remind me?

Yes. In the settings under Notifications, you set up rules – for example a reminder when a task has been running for 60 minutes, for all tasks or only selected ones, on the weekdays you choose. SimpleTime can also remind you when nothing has been tracked for a while.

Day view and insights

What does the day view show?

Every entry of a day with its start, end and duration – as a list, or as a timeline from 0 to 24 with a marker for the current time. At the top, you see how today compares to yesterday.

Which charts and statistics are there?

Pie charts by task and by productivity, for a day, a week, a month or a year. Under More statistics, you’ll find the comparison with the previous period, the trend, how your time is spread across the day, your top tasks and the longest and shortest entries. Every task also has its own info page – first entry, longest entry, this week, this year.

What is the productivity score?

You can give each task a category: productive, unproductive, necessary – or leave it out. The score shows how much of your tracked time was productive or necessary: (productive + necessary) ÷ total time × 100.

Can I share a chart?

Yes, any chart can be shared as an image or saved to Photos. To save it, SimpleTime only asks for permission to add photos – it cannot see your photo library.

How do I create a PDF report?

Under Settings › Export Report, choose a period – from today to all time, or your own – pick the sections you want and drag them into order. SimpleTime creates the PDF with every task and subtask, ready to share or save. SimpleTime Pro adds extra sections: trend, daily spread, comparison and goals.

For timesheets there's the “All entries” section: every entry day by day with start, end, task and note, plus daily totals, a grand total and decimal hours – perfect for checking your hours against your payslip. It's free, no Pro needed, and switched on by default.

Widgets, Siri and Focus

Which widgets are there?

For the Home Screen: Today, Running task and Week. For the Lock Screen: what’s running and for how long. There’s also a switch for Control Center. While a task is running, a Live Activity shows it on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. With SimpleTime Pro, you also get a quick-start widget that you fill with your own tasks.

Can I start tracking without opening the app?

Yes, in several ways. Touch and hold the app icon to stop what’s running or to start one of your tasks. Type a task’s name into iPhone search and tap it. Or use the switch in Control Center, a widget, Siri – or, with SimpleTime Pro, your Apple Watch.

How does SimpleTime work with Siri and Shortcuts?

Say, for example, “Start Work in SimpleTime”, “Stop tracking in SimpleTime”, “How much did I track today in SimpleTime?” or “What’s running in SimpleTime?”. Siri understands these phrases in English and German. In every language, the actions are available in the Shortcuts app, where you can also give them a phrase of your own.

What does the focus filter do?

With a focus filter, SimpleTime follows your Focus: when “Work” turns on, the task list shows only your work category – and tracking can start and end with the Focus. You set it up in the iOS Settings under Focus › your Focus › Focus Filters › Add Filter › SimpleTime. The focus filter is part of SimpleTime Pro.

Sync, backup and export

Does SimpleTime sync between my devices?

Yes, automatically through iCloud – on every device that is signed in with the same Apple Account. When sync runs is decided by the system; the settings show when it last ran, and you can check it there.

Can I use SimpleTime without iCloud?

Yes. Without iCloud, your data stays on this one device. You can turn sync on or off in the iOS Settings under your name › iCloud. Without iCloud, backups that you export and keep somewhere safe are all the more important.

How do backups work?

Under Settings › Export / Import Data, you can turn on automatic backups – hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. SimpleTime saves them as JSON files in iCloud Drive, in the folder “SimpleTime/Backups”, and keeps the 20 most recent. You can also export a backup yourself at any time.

Can I protect my backups with a password?

Yes. With a password, the backup file is encrypted on your device before it’s saved. Keep the password safe: without it, nobody can restore the backup – not you, and not us. There is no way around it.

How do I restore a backup?

Under Settings › Export / Import Data › Import backup from JSON. Your existing data stays, and anything missing is added. On a new device, wait until iCloud sync has delivered your data first – otherwise tasks can appear twice.

Can I export my data?

Yes, at any time: as a CSV file with task, note, duration, start and end – for Excel, Numbers or any analysis tool –, as a PDF report, or as a complete backup in JSON.

Can I import data from another app?

Not directly. SimpleTime imports its own backups (JSON); CSV files from other apps can’t be imported.

How do I move to a new iPhone?

Sign in with the same Apple Account and install SimpleTime – iCloud brings your entries back by itself. If you don’t use iCloud, export a backup on the old device and import it on the new one. Places belong to each device and aren’t synced.

Privacy and security

Where is my data stored?

On your devices and in your private iCloud. Nobody else can read it – not even us. SimpleTime has no servers of its own.

Does SimpleTime track me?

No. No analytics, no ads, no third-party SDKs, no user profiles. The app doesn’t send your data to us or to anyone else. You’ll find the details in our privacy policy.

Which permissions does SimpleTime ask for?

Only what a feature needs, and only when you use it: notifications for reminders and place notices, your location for places, adding photos to save images, and Face ID or Touch ID for the app lock. In the settings under Privacy › Overview and Permissions, you see each one with its current status.

Why does SimpleTime want my location?

Only for places, which are part of SimpleTime Pro: so that a task can start when you arrive somewhere. iOS watches the areas you set and tells the app when you arrive or leave. Your places stay on your device, and SimpleTime keeps no record of where you’ve been. Without places, SimpleTime doesn’t need your location.

How does the app lock work?

Under Settings › App lock, you choose whether SimpleTime opens with your iPhone passcode – including Face ID or Touch ID – or with a code of your own. In the app switcher, SimpleTime stays covered, and task names no longer appear in iPhone search or on the app icon. Important: if you forget your own code, the only way back into the app is to delete and reinstall it.

How do I delete all my data?

In the settings under Privacy › Delete all data. It removes everything at once – all entries and tasks, the trash, reminders, the backups in iCloud Drive, exports and settings – on this device, in iCloud and, as soon as they’re online, on your other devices. This can’t be undone.

What’s under Diagnostics?

If SimpleTime crashes or freezes, iOS gives the app a report about it. The reports stay on your device and contain no tasks and no times – only the place in the code where it happened. If you like, share one with us: it helps us find the bug.

SimpleTime Pro

What does SimpleTime Pro include?

The Apple Watch app, reviews of your week, month and year, places, the year at a glance, goals, the focus filter, a quick-start widget, seven accent colours or one of your own plus sixteen app icons, and extra sections in the PDF report. Whatever comes later is included. All about SimpleTime Pro

What does SimpleTime Pro cost?

Pro is available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time Lifetime purchase. Prices depend on your country and currency and are shown in the app before you buy.

Can I try Pro first?

Yes. New subscribers can try Monthly or Yearly free for a week; the app shows whether the trial applies to you. If you don’t cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, the subscription renews at the price shown.

Can my family use Pro too?

Yes. SimpleTime Pro works with Family Sharing – one purchase for up to six people.

How do I get Pro on my other devices?

Pro belongs to your Apple Account. On your other devices with the same account, it’s usually unlocked by itself. If not, tap Restore on the Pro page under Settings › SimpleTime Pro.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In your App Store settings – on iPhone under Settings › your name › Subscriptions – or in the app on the Pro page under Manage subscription. Pro stays active until the end of the period you’ve already paid for.

I have a subscription – can I switch to Lifetime?

Yes, right on the Pro page. Apple doesn’t end the subscription by itself, though: cancel it afterwards so that it doesn’t renew. The app reminds you.

What happens when Pro ends?

Nothing gets lost. Your entries, goals and places stay saved. The Pro features are locked again – places, for example, no longer start tasks – and everything is back as soon as Pro is active again.

Does Pro need an internet connection?

No. SimpleTime checks your purchase with the App Store whenever it can. Without a connection, Pro keeps working – for up to two weeks without contact.

Apple Watch and places

How do I set up the Apple Watch app?

The Apple Watch app is part of SimpleTime Pro. Install it on your watch, then open SimpleTime on your iPhone once – after a few seconds, the watch shows your tasks. Your iPhone stays the source: whatever the watch starts is tracked there, with the same Live Activity and the same widgets.

What can I do on my Apple Watch?

Start and stop from your wrist – your favourites, what you used last, or any task via search. Start earlier: 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes ago, or seamlessly from the end of your last entry. Stop with a double tap. Keep an eye on your day, week and goals, with the running time on your watch face and in the Smart Stack. If your iPhone is out of reach, your taps are kept with their time and delivered later.

How do places work?

Add a place – your office or your gym, for example – with a radius from 50 m to 10 km, and choose a task. When you arrive, the task starts on its own, or SimpleTime asks first. With a waiting time, nothing starts when you just pass by. When you leave, the task can stop, and you can limit a place to certain days and times.

Why does a place start late or not at all?

Places need location access set to “Always”, with precise location turned on. Below 100 m, iOS often notices your arrival late, because in the background your location usually comes from Wi-Fi and the mobile network, not GPS – a larger radius helps. iOS monitors at most 20 places per app, and on the Mac there are no places.

More

Can I change how SimpleTime looks?

Yes: light, dark or following the system, and three row heights for the task list. With SimpleTime Pro, you also get seven accent colours or one of your own – it runs through buttons, switches and charts – and sixteen app icons.

Is SimpleTime accessible?

Yes. SimpleTime supports VoiceOver and Dynamic Type throughout. If something doesn’t work for you, please let us know.

Is SimpleTime suitable for freelancers?

For recording your time, yes: keep clients and projects apart as tasks and subtasks, and export a PDF report or a CSV file whenever you need a record. Hourly rates and invoices aren’t part of SimpleTime – for those, take the export into your invoicing tool.

Is there a version for Android, Windows or the web?

No. SimpleTime is made for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. You can export your data as CSV at any time.

I found a bug or have an idea – where do I send it?

Write to us at contact@simple-time.app. For a bug, please include your device model and iOS version. If SimpleTime crashed, a report from Settings › Diagnostics helps a lot. Every message is read.

How can I support SimpleTime?

SimpleTime is made by one person. A rating in the App Store helps, and so does telling others about it – and SimpleTime Pro keeps the development going.

Still have a question?
